KUALA LUMPUR:Petronas is providing RM100 million to build pedestrian bridges and covered walkways in the city's Golden Triangle area.
Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail said the construction work, he said, would be undertaken by City Hall and Petronas's subsidiary KLCC Holdings Sdn Bhd
He said covered walkways and pedestrian bridges connecting Berjaya Times Square to Lot 10 in Jalan Bukit Bintang and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) were being built under the first of City Hall's projects. He said it would be completed by the end of the year.
"These bridges will connect commercial buildings with tourist attractions. We are consulting the building owners to accommodate the construction work and ensure that the design is appropriate for the buildings."
He said KLCC Holdings' project would be carried out in five phases. Construction work on the first phase, which will link Impiana Hotel to KLCC, has already started.
"Another similar project is being carried out by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd at five locations for the light-rail transit (LRT) stations at Plaza Rakyat, Hang Tuah, Putra World Trade Centre, Bandaraya and Pasar Seni," he said.
It was reported yesterday that Prasarana was spending RM30 million to build the covered and elevated walkways to link the stations to high-density commercial buildings and between stations.
The covered walkways are intended to shelter pedestrians and encourage more people to use public transport.
Fuad spoke after presenting prizes to the winners of a pedestrian bridge and walkway design competition. The competition was for students of higher learning institutions.
He said some of the winning designs could be used in the construction of pedestrian walkways.
Muhd Ashadi Samsudin, 26, of the Universiti Putra Malaysia team which won in the heritage zone category, said their design was based on the functionality of pedestrian walkways.
"We did not look at it as just a platform but also as an attraction which people can go to and carry out activities," he said.
Edwin Ng, 22, from the winning team in the transit zone category, said the pedestrian walkways that his team designed represented an "organic stream" in the form of moving people and reflected the hectic lifestyle of KLites.
"We noticed that some of the existing walkways attracted beggars and some are spots for petty crimes like snatch theft.
"So, we tried to overcome this problem by making our bridge more transparent through the selection of appropriate materials and the design itself," said Edwin, who is also from UPM.
UPM also won in the city centre commercial zone category.
The top three teams in each of the categories received RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively, and certificates.
There were 68 entries from seven higher learning institutions.
