Windows XP might be a very reliable system, but it's often showing error codes 45, 46, 47, 48 or 49. These errors are all caused by a malfunctioning piece of hardware on your system, which prevents Windows from being able to perform the functions, features & options which you would expect from your PC. If you're trying to use XP and have found that it's continually showing one or more of these errors, it's likely a problem with the "drivers" of your system, and needs to be fixed.
These errors will typically show these messages:
These errors will typically show these messages:
* Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
* Windows cannot gain access to this hardware device because the operating system is in the process of shutting down. (Code 46)
* Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for safe removal, but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)
* The software for this device has been blocked from starting because it is known to have problems with Windows. Contact the hardware vendor for a new driver. (Code 48)
* Windows cannot start new hardware devices because the system hive is too large (exceeds the Registry Size Limit). (Code 49)
Although all these errors mean different things, the fact is that they are all caused by the same problem on your system, and can be repaired in the same way. The problem is that the hardware of your PC cannot be used or read on your system, as there are a series of problems with it. The main cause of issues is to do with the drivers that are installed on your system, and how they may either be incorrect or the wrong version.
In order to fix these errors (they all have the same fix), you need to make sure that your computer is able to use all the files & pieces of hardware which it needs to. In order to do this, your first step should be to load up the "Device Manager" of your system and update any of the corrupt drivers which are inside. The device manager is what Windows computers have inside to inform you of which hardware components you have on your system, and whether they are working as well as they should. You should go through the list of hardware in the Device Manager, and then remove components which either have a yellow exclamation mark, or show a red cross by them.
You should also look to use a "registry cleaner" to fix this error. Registry cleaners are software programs which are designed to scan through the registry database of your PC and fix the variety of errors which often form inside. The registry database is one of the most important parts of the entire Windows system, as it stores a huge number of vital settings for your PC. However, it's often the case that the registry will actually cause so many problems for your computer that Windows will either run slower or with errors as a result. A corrupt registry could be one of the main reasons you're seeing error codes 45, 46, 47, 48 or 49 on XP, and it should be cleaned by using a reliable registry tool.
