Error Code 18 is quite a common error on the Windows XP system, and is caused by damaged or corrupt drivers. This error generally shows when you want to use a certain piece of hardware, such as a game controller, and don't have the driver installed correctly. In order to resolve this error, you need to be able to repair the various driver errors which are causing it to show.
This error will normally show in this format:
* The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 18)
The cause of this error, as described, is down to driver issues. More specifically, the drivers can either be faulty, damaged or outdated - preventing your computer from being able to use the hardware components it requires to run. As Windows XP is actually quite an old system, it doesn't have any of the in-built drivers that a lot of the newer Windows systems have as standard. This means that if you've added any new or obscure hardware components to your XP machine, you first need to look for a driver for the component, or update the drivers that you may have already.

This means that if you've added any new or obscure hardware components to your XP machine, you first need to look for a driver for the component, or update the drivers that you may have already.
The first step to resolve error code 18 is to install / reinstall the various drivers which are causing the error. To do this, you should look in the "Device Manager" of Windows and scan through the list of hardware for one that has a yellow exclamation mark by it. This shows that Windows either doesn't have a driver for this component, or the driver is outdated / corrupted. You should identify the piece of hardware and then update the driver accordingly for it (which you can get from the Manufacturer's website). Alternatively, there are a number of programs which will automatically update all the drivers on your system, allowing your computer to run much smoother again.
The second step to resolve this error is to use a "registry cleaner" to clean out any of the errors & problems inside the core of Windows. These are software tools which clean through the "registry database" of your PC, which is where Windows stores all the files & settings that your computer requires to run. The registry stores everything from your desktop wallpaper to your most recent emails, and is also where Windows keeps a lot of its core settings (such as driver information), which makes it one of the most important parts of your system. Unfortunately, many parts of the registry often become corrupt / damaged, leading your system to develop all sorts of errors. In order to repair this part of your PC, it's essential that you use a registry cleaner to scan through all the settings & options that could be damaged inside the registry & causing the error code 18.
