Maintaining safety at work requires attention to chemical hazards, equipment and work station design, physical environment including temperature, humidity, light, noise, ventilation, space, task design, psychological factors and sometimes, other environment exposures such as summer temperatures and winter cold spells. The level of safety usually depends on workers and managers attitude to the subject. Facts are that most work accidents are in result of slips and falls on work premises, or injuries sustained whilst handling heavy items. The statistics about claims that were made recently show that most injuries are caused by defective and dangerous equipment or because of dangerous work processes often associated with a lack of proper supervision and training.
People who work in dangerous workplace environments, and situations, in a factory, an under construction building, or site are prepared to face all possible injuries. Safety, and security precautions are taken seriously by the administration, because they are responsible for any damage, or injury caused to their employees.Sometimes it so happens that a person is struck with a most strange kind of injury. He is taken unguarded, if he is lucky, he might survive a fatal injury otherwise, there are such examples when people had to go through difficult phase of their lives because of such strange work injury. Here are some of the most normal work injuries faced by people all around the world ;
1. Being caught up or compressed between heavy objects in a lift is purely coincidental and unexpected kind of a situation, when a person is caught between heavy stuff being moved from one place to another. He might be compressed, and receive serious injury. This kind of work injury can take place in lifts, or narrow staircases where the view of the object-movers is obstructed by the huge objects they are shifting.
2. Being jammed in a cafeteria, and getting minor burns form hot plate/tea/coffee. Those workplaces, where the employees are exposed to heating equipment in laboratories, factories, or even cafeterias, often get minor or major burns because of accidentally knocking on the hot surface. This can happen to those as well who go to crowded cafeterias for refreshments. The last thing they want is to bathe in hot tea/coffee in their workplace cafe.
3. Banging into the sliding glass doors, while texting on cell phone. Mobile phones have been a major cause of accidents on roads, and in workplaces. People are so engrossed while texting their messages, that they get themselves, and others in trouble. Its common for people to bump into one another while texting on their cell phones, but in case they ram in the sliding glass doors of their workplace, then they can seriously harm themselves.
4. Workers hand caught in a machine; thanks to the modern automated technology in industries saving people from extra work and unexpected injuries. However, this has not ruled out the probability of getting injuries from having their hands caught in machines. Even today, thousands of people across the globe are prone to such strange work injuries.
5. Slip and fall accident; falling from an under construction top storey of the building is amongst common construction site mishaps. Slip and fall accidents cost workplace owners millions of dollars in compensation. No mater how much effort they make to minimise such accidents, these keep on happening all the time.
Every workplace has unlimited examples of strange injuries. These are shocking and painful for the victims as well as for the management of the company. A well-designed workspace allows each employee to work comfortably without needing to overextend, use awkward postures, sit or stand too long. On other occasions, the equipment may be satisfactory but the task could be redesigned for safety at work under your standard of operations.
You want everyone at your place of business to walk the safety walk as well as talk the safety talk. Safety awareness is the key to success in preventing injuries. You cannot stress enough at your safety committee meetings that which is required for documentation and specific training sessions for safety at work.
Given here are seven areas to consider when evaluating worker safety ;
1.Do they follow the rules and stick to accepted safety at work practices that are written by your department?
2.Do they always use the provided safety equipment?
3.Do they report unsafe acts, conditions and equipment that is not operating correctly?
4.Do your employees offer suggestions to solve safety problems or concerns? Can their suggestions be turned in to your safety committee to help other departments?
5.Are employees planning their work to include safety checks before they start?
6.Do they support the overall safety at work programs?
7.Do they report any illness or injury that arises from the job immediately to the Human Resource Department, Safety Office or Security if applicable per your safety at work rules?
