Construction workers face some of the most dangerous working conditions of any occupation. It's extremely important for construction workers to wear the right clothing and choose the right accessories for their own protection and safety. Here are some tips to help anyone who works in construction or at other dangerous work sites stay safe:
Vests
Whether you're just wearing a t-shirt, work shirt or a sweatshirt, on many work sites you will need to wear a reflective safety vest. This consists of brightly colored mesh fabric with reflective striping and a front hook with a loop closure. A safety vest will help you be seen by machinery, tractors, vehicles and other workers more easily.
Footwear
A good, reliable pair of boots is essential. Boots should be comfortable but very strong and include a steel toe. Comfortable, thick socks are also an important accessory. Socks will provide cushion, but also warmth.
Head wear
Hardhats are a must on just about any work site. A good hardhat will be made from one piece of plastic or other material and be adjustable for an easy fit. There are many new styles of hardhats now available, including designer hardhats, hardhats with company logos and even hardhats in the shape of cowboy hats.
Eye Protection
Safety glasses are crucial for any work site where sparks, screws, nails, stones or other debris may be flying through the air. Safety glasses will provide protection of your eyes from any flying debris. Safety glasses are now available in a wide variety of styles, colors and lens types.
Gloves
You can't forget the gloves. Gloves can offer extra grip, hand protection, protection from spills and liquids as well as additional warmth and comfort when handling lumber or other materials.
Breathing and Ear Protection
On some work sites, facial protection will be important. This includes dust masks and particulate respirators to protect your lungs from dust, chemical fumes, pesticides and other pollutants. Ear protection in the form of ear plugs and/or ear muffs are also important.
Cover Alls
For messy work with dangerous materials, cover alls are a great option. Cover alls will protect your clothing and hair from getting dirty or contaminated while working.
Back Support
For any job that requires heavy lifting or lifting of any kind, back support is crucial. Back supports usually go completely around your waste and lower back to give extra support while you are lifting or bending.
Whether you are working on a road, rail, new home, house remodel or whatever, don't forget to wear the proper safety gear.
