Road safety audit is a formal examination of the planning, design and construction of a road project, and of the characteristics and operation of an existing road, by independent and qualified examiners, to identify any potentially unsafe feature or operational arrangement that may adversely effect the safety of any road user. Aim of RSA process is to ensure that all road projects and all existing roads are capable of providing the highest practicable standard of traffic safety for all road users.

  1. Identification of potential safety hazards on new road projects at the appropriate stage, so that they can be eliminated or otherwise treated to mitigate their adverse effects at minimum cost,
  2. Identification of hazardous features of an existing road so that they can be eliminated or treated before they become crash prone locations,
  3. To ensure that the safety requirements of all road users are explicitly considered in the planning, design, construction and operation of road projects,
  4. To reduce the overall “through life” costs of a road project to the community

  3. Road Safety Audit - RSA is ‘customer focussed’ (i.e road user) rather than the processes  involved in achieving the product (i.e road itself).
